Glaswegian doom-strangeness stalks through the mist in the form of Smirk.

Back in October, they released their first slab of music – a 3 track EP consisting of some very uniquely weird and wonderful sounds.

I can’t simply label this as ‘doom’ metal, it’s so much more.

Smirk have an avant-garde twist, which may make you believe you could be listening to Mr Bungle on a drug binge.

They intertwine noise rock and circus music, creating atmospheres of unsafety and creepiness.

The vocals are enhanced to sound unnatural and alien-like at times, becoming more instrument than human.

There are moments of pure chaotic, nonsensical noise before breaking into a jam.

What really helps to make Smirk unique is their use of brass instruments.

Don’t be thinking this is some sort of Reel Big Fish party (though there’s nothing wrong with that in my opinion, I love ska), there’s repetitive, long drawn out sections, building dread and discomfort along the way.

I don’t know what on earth Smirk have been digesting to create this bonkers stuff, but I cannot pull myself away from listening to this mind-bending display.

You can listen to the EP on bandcamp or Spotify, and keep up with Smirk through their instagram, @smirkglasgowmusic.
