It was inevitable that, as a long-time fan of Mothman, a band under the name ‘Mothslut’ was going to cross my path.
Having heard of the band through Mrs Frighthouse, a Scottish noise metal band I had seen late last year in The Banshee Labyrinth, I was immediately interested.
A queer gothic darkwave duo from Manchester in England, Nathan ‘Mizz Moth’ and Florian ‘The Twink of Darkness’ have gained a cult following in the Manchester underground scene for their palpable energy and striking live performances. They captivated the locals and wider Scotland when they visited the ‘Garage’ in Glasgow in January of this year.

The new song, Times Like This, keeps the signature 80s and 90s gothic influence present in Mothslut’s other music, turning to more of a Depeche Mode style rather than the Sisters of Mercy energy soaked into previous singles.
According to the band, the single is inspired by “the insular feeling of being a stranger to yourself.”
The melancholy, introspective lyrics left me dancing alone in my room on first listen, lying eyes closed on my bed for the fourth.
The repetitive synth beat feels hypnotic, and if left on repeat, you might not realise any time has passed at all. I can imagine very easily a whole crowd dancing to this, swaying and waving together like grass in a night wind; it will be quite the sight to see. This is something timeless and beautiful.
