A new six-part documentary series is taking viewers inside the unusual creative world of fashion artist Liam Brandon Murray.
Filmed over five years, The Devil’s Tailor, directed by filmmaker Alexander Miguel, follows Murray and his work as he creates unusual wearable sculptures. His designs are influenced by religion, mythology, history, and the macabre. Miguel says he was first interested in Murray’s sculptures, but soon became more interested in the person behind them.

Derby-based designer Murray does not see himself as simply a fashion designer or a sculptor. His work is difficult to place into one category because he creates pieces in his own way and has little interest in other people. He says his work comes from a refusal to imitate what has already been done.
His ideas can come from almost anywhere. Ancient temples, cathedral stonework and religious images have influenced his work, as have everyday, unusual objects. Items such as joke-shop teeth and rusty nails have all helped to inspire Murray’s designs. Murray describes himself as a “texture freak”, demonstrating how important shapes, surfaces and details are to his creative process.

The documentary also looks at Murray’s relationship with Rebecca, who plays an important role in helping his work reach the public. She helps with organising fashion shows and exhibitions, as well as driving, dressing and other practical jobs. While Murray focuses on creating, Rebecca helps keep the rest of the work moving.
Murray has an unusual perspective on his own art. He does not believe every piece needs a serious explanation or a deep meaning. When asked why he creates, he simply says, “Not sure, I just do.”
“I make things for no good fucking reason.”, he says.

For Miguel, the documentary is about more than art and fashion. It explores imagination, belief, partnership, and the lives people create when they follow their own ideas.
Murray hopes to be remembered as someone who introduced something new rather than simply improving an existing idea. The Devil’s Tailor aims to give audiences a closer look at his work, his creative world, and the people around him.
