Edinburgh’s alternative scene is due to take another hit as popular rock & metal bar, Legends – formerly known as Opium – announces its closure.
The team behind the venue, which has operated on Cowgate for over 35 years, announced on Facebook that they have been told there is “no place for it”.
In their announcement, they shared that the bar could close as early as next week, citing a lack of information as the reason for the uncertain date.
“We are angry. We are heartbroken.” The team said, “This is more than just a closure of a bar. It is a continuation of the total disregard of the alternative scene in Edinburgh and the loss of yet another live music venue.”

“For 35+ years, it has been home for people who don’t always fit in the mainstream – a place where the alternative scene in Edinburgh could exist, grow and thrive. It has been a venue for live music, a space for artists, bands, and fans to come together, let go and find friendship, and a sense of community that has helped people through some of their toughest times.”
In lieu of an official final night, the staff have organised an event on Friday, 13th March. They invite patrons, performers, and supporters alike to reflect on the history of the venue, make some noise and celebrate the alternative community.
“We need to prove that this community is real, it is powerful, and it refuses to disappear quietly.” They added.

“Being honest, this could potentially be our final weekend with the lack of information we have been given, we still cannot confirm when we will actually close down.”
They ended their announcement, “This scene is built by the people in it, and right now Legends needs you.”

Ex-staff members and customers have flooded the bar’s socials with support, outrage and memories. A comment left by the previous owner, Rab Orre, urges the community to find another venue and keep Edinburgh’s alternative scene alive.
Legends will be remembered as a staple of Edinburgh’s alternative scene and as a place of safety, community, and acceptance for those outside of the mainstream. It will be sadly missed by those who attended and performed at the venue.
