A new mental health support group has opened its doors in Glasgow recently, aimed specifically at the Scottish rock and metal community.

Heavy Metal Therapy, the group behind the initiative, was first founded by five heavy metal fans who had experienced mental health issues in the past or had training within a related profession. Following a successful run in England, the team has expanded its services to Scotland, inviting the alternative community to participate in wellbeing-focused peer support sessions at Bird and Blend Tea Co.

According to their website, Heavy Metal Therapy aims to create a space where individuals can find and reflect on healing experiences related to metal music. The team believes that enjoying community and sharing experiences around heavy metal music can be emotionally beneficial for their members.

They host a variety of experiences, including their peer support sessions, guided ‘Heavy Metal Yoga’, and online collaborative playlists.

Following their first Scotland-based support session on the 25th of March, the team will be hosting one on the last Wednesday of every month between 6.30 and 8.30, with no need to book ahead of time.

During these meetings, attendees are encouraged to talk about their concerns, opinions, and struggles, as well as share success stories and positive coping strategies within a like-minded, metal-loving community space.
